September, 2006, Flywheels Here!!

Meeting Notes:

Wes started off with Old Business, (That’s right he is old, he just had his 70th B-Day) Homer Show had 114 register entrants, basically it was a pretty good day and I heard the BBQ at Sue & Tanos was also a fun time. Wes wanted to give a Big Thanks to the Silverton Police Department for all their help during the day and especially getting cars onto the highway when the run was over!! Chief Lewis stated he was a little worried that there were 2 kids missing from around the skateboarders area after Wes had a little run in with some young-uns. Chief Rick said he would be interviewing Wes later in the week! Along with the Cops, how about Silverton’s Public Works crews, they worked hard to keep everything going in the park. Last but not least, well maybe, Brian Littlefield for all the barricades he borrowed from work.

A few ideas came out at the meeting for next years run: Handicap Parking in the Pool area. Add a Rat Rod trophy. The Davenport race happened, Wes and D.W. located (?) Some pushers and a driver just before the race happened. If we think we might want to do this again, we might want to get things arranged a snick bit earlier than the morning of. Hmmmm. Wes then stated he would like to get a committee put together to work on future races and to assist with getting some young whipper snappers to push. Anyone wishing to assist, please let Wes know. The First Friday Car show held the night before the Homer Show was a hit. Some discussion about doing more than once a year.

Macleay Report:

Wes wants to have the same crews as Homer work at Macleay. This is coming up on Saturday September 23. WE STILL NEED BEER SIGNS for the Auction, so dig around and bring what ever you come up with to the September meeting on the 21st. Along with the beer signs, see if you have any neat type prizes you would like to give to Larry for the Raffle prize table too. Bro Bill, Edd, myself and a few others are working on the games for Macleay. Radiator pour and a spark plug changing contest. Should be fun and interesting. If anyone wants help out with these new games and some of the other crews, please make sure to raise your hand or just show up and say Hey, I Want to Help!!!

P.S.  If I gave you a name tag and landyard over the past couple of Flywheels Shows remember to bring them to the Macleay show so you can look good and people will know who you R.  I'll try to get tags made for the newer members!  Oops, more work for Rand.  As Bob would say, "Damn The Bad Luck"!!

THE CAMP OUT!!!!

Okay, now that we got the basics out of the way, lets get onto more important stuff. Wes, Bill and myself dropped in to the Macleay Inn the other day and talked with Jerry to confirm that the Club can use the canyon for the Saturday night camp out after the Car Show for Club members. No Problem!! So the intrepid trio grabbed the RIGHT key from Jerry, (whole nother story there, ask Noble!) and drove over to the Ranch and then down the twisty road to the camp area which is 1 mile down from the main road. The Ranch is located at 10425 Deschutes Rd SE. which is 2 miles off of Howell Prairie Rd. Wow, it is cool down there! Covered Pavilion with power, lots of trees, little bridges over dried up creeks, etc. Lots of room close to the pavilion for RV’s and then several areas for tents. The road down is a bit small and really low cars might have a problem. RV’s should do okay, maybe scratch the roof a few times. But if anyone is thinking about camping there after the car show you need to make the next meeting to discuss it with Wes, Bill and the rest. Don’t want everyone showing up with out a clue to what’s going on. This needs to be planned out a little bit first. I will have a bunch of pictures there of the area for everyone to view.

New Business:

As stated earlier, next meeting this coming 21st with an Officers Meeting at Wes’s on the 18th at 7:30. A short discussion about how working with the Salem Area Car Council has worked with getting fliers to people. Some think it is not working as good as in the past. Maybe we should go back to what worked years ago. Post Cards, Special Invites, etc.

Good of the Order:

Mark Link wants to put together a Club Calendar with members cars on it. Get pictures to him and he’ll get more info to us later. He stated he wants Wes and Bob’s Trucks first. 50/50 drawing went to visitor Ken Heskeith to the tune of $74.50 with the Clubs half going to a friend of the Rhynes who is battling cancer plus a big pass of the hat to add to the clubs share. Way To Go Flywheels!! As Jack said, This is what the Club is all about, having fun and helping people!!

Just thought I would send this along and update you. We took 6 cars to PDX to the car show yesterday (Thursday) and came home with 6 trophies. First Place for Bill Sanders ('48 Merc Coupe), my wagon, Darlene Link's new Mustang. Wes's Best Truck, Mark Link's Falcon (Best Under Construction), and Keenan's Roadster (Best Pro Street). Not bad huh???

Okay for all you real Drag Racers, go to the link below and read a great article about the northwest teams back in the 60's. You are sure to recognize a few names. BZZB

HERE IS A LITTLE WISDOM FROM THE ABBOTT OF THE BROTHERHOOD.

THE PASTOR

The pastor entered his donkey in a race and it won. The pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in another race, and it won again. The local paper read: PASTOR'S ASS OUT FRONT. The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the pastor not to enter the donkey in any more races. The next day, the local paper headline read: BISHOP SCRATCHES PASTOR'S ASS.

This was too much for the Bishop, so he ordered the pastor to get rid of the donkey. The pastor decided to give it to a nun in a nearby convent. The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day: NUN HAS THE BEST ASS IN TOWN. The Bishop fainted. He informed the nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey, so she sold it to a farmer for $10. The next day the paper read: NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10. This was too much for the Bishop, so he ordered the nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the high plains where it could run wild. The next day the headlines read: NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE.

Alas;...... the Bishop was buried the next day.

MORAL OF THE STORY??

Being concerned about public opinion can bring you much grief and misery, and even shorten your life. So, be yourself and enjoy life .. STOP WORRYING ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE'S ASS, and you'll live longer and be a lot happier!

Molalla Show:

Wow! Good show! We done good. I will let Mark send you the total results but we had 17 members there so we won the club attendance award and we won 11 individual awards too I think. Leon has Wes's, Bob's, Bob's, and the club trophys. We all should bring them to the next club meeting in September. Roadsterguy

Wes's Corner!!!!

BOY!! Did the summer come and go already? I think they get shorter every Year. Sure hope everyone had a good one. I think I did. Well the one more thing to get done before the rain set in is The Macleay Show. It will be Sept. 23 2006. We will need the same crews As Homer Show. They all seem to work good together. Will have a few car games this year which will need a crew to run them. Need everyone that has Beer Sign hid away dig them out and bring to the Sept 21 meeting. Will also need a tent set-up crew on Friday afternoon. Hope to have the what times by Club meeting Sept 21. Also will need a crew on Monday after the show. Should know the times for take down party after the show Sat. Bill, Rand and I checked out the campgrounds last week. LOTS of room for campers and motor homes. The road down to the campground could be hard on the REAL low riders. But taking your time should make it OK. Getting out will be easier the road will be well graded. More show and road info. at meeting.

Looking like Mike's, the tent guy, trailer will be home most of the month of Oct. just maybe The Club can find time to replace the trail bed. The last two Silverton's First Friday Night went well for The Club's display of club car/trucks. Display in Aug. was over 35 plus Club Cars/ trucks. The Club did it again in Sept. with 25 plus Club vehicles. This is something the town would like us to do EVERY First Friday. SOME of us think that would be To often. Next Meeting will be Sept. 21 2006 at The Countryman starting around 7:30 PM. Planning on eating show up around 6:30 PM. ALSO check on any can foods you can bring for the food bank. Its getting that time of year again. Also need around eight vehicles for Silverton home coming Friday evening Oct. 6 2006. Trucks and Rag tops requested. More on this at this months meeting. HOW About a Officers meeting on Sept 18 at my shop around 7;30 PM. I'm done!!!!!!!! Think SUN-SUN-SUN for next Weekend. Later Wes

Larry and Sonja Johnson here, we did the F100 tour with Wes, Bob, Glen, Ed, and Harry. Had a ball and joined the club. I noticed you sent out a help wanted on a 302 intake, which I don't have one of, but I do have a need and maybe you could help here. I am looking for a convertible, 50's 60's or 70's full size, Caddy, Olds, Buick, Ford, Merc, etc. It could be something under $15,000 finished or a beater for $1,500. It does need to run and be mostly there. This is a starter for my wife's son (38 and never had a rod, but always interested) so doesn't need to be a numbers matching 427, 406, 455, etc. If you know of a possible match, have them give me a call. 509 922 2217 or cell 509 953 3426 Thanks, Larry
