The March 2006 Flypaper / est. 1961
Okay, going to try something a little different with this newsletter, well you have already seen it when you received it in the mail, but anyway I want to try to make it a better newsletter and hopefully start getting more input from Officers, members and maybe even throw in a guest columnist every now and then. Hell who knows, it just might work.
Still going to have the same ole columns; Wes’s Corner, Meeting Notes, Want Ads and the always funny The Great White North. But there is always room for one more, right Ronnie? The Garage Scene idea is always good, but someone with a garage and a project would need to actually write something and then get it to me. Several members have done that in the past, but we never have consistently kept it up. Maybe with the membership of this Club being what it is today it can work. There has got to be someone out there that can still write a paragraph or two, even a picture every now and then would be cool. Then we can work on Web Master Bob and get a additional page on the web for other things as we go.
Okay, back to normal (for me that is a scary thought)
Meeting Notes:
Well we had close to 40 members at the February meeting and even signed up 3 new members. They are Guy & Mary Smith, Troy & Peggy Perdue and Lon & Cindy Gregory. Some of you will remember Cindy from years ago, she is Norm Browns daughter and they are working on a 68 Chevy PU. Guy is working on a 60 Ford and Troy has a 67 Mustang and a cute little 62 Sunbeam Alpine.
Wes gave his usual welcome to the guests and then got the meeting going. Larry gave a short report on upcoming events and then went on to make a short presentation to the membership about purchasing Liability Insurance for the Club. This was approved and Larry and Wes will make it happen.
Noble gave a report on the Roadster show and everything is progressing fine. You will get this newsletter after the show so I will not go into too much detail here.
Mark Link won the 50/50 $$$ 56 BUCKS!!!
Club Shows/Activities:
We will need to start thinking about the Homer show soon and with that said we need a few members to start working on ideas for goody bags, etc. for both shows. Remember we raised our gate fee to $10.00 and part of that money is to fund a nice goody bag, etc.
Wes and myself stopped out at the MaCleay Inn recently and discussed the September show and the Club campout at their ranch. It is a done deal and we’ll have much more info soon.
The always FUN Saturday at the Station is going to change weekends to make it work better. Starting in April, we will meet at the Station on the 3rd Saturday of the month.
Wes and Chief Lewis attended a meeting the other day with a group from the Tea Place? here in Silverton about assisting with another car show they want to put on downtown during some antique show on July 4th. Short notice, HUH? More info later.
Glenn from Alfafa would still like to do a B-B-Q at his place but on a different format than before. He is looking at a weekend not during the Joseph run time.
GOOD of the ORDER:
A big group of members showed up at Norm a Saturday or two ago to assist with assembling his Model A HOT ROD PU. Got a lot done and it reminded me of how the Overhauling Show works. Cool Stuff.
"Flash Traffic"
( for immediate release )
The Boys from the Rods-n-Relics camp have done it! The screaming sounds of Hoots & Hollers were from the Boys not his radical little mouse motor. That little mouse motor is in all actuality a very healthy small block chev. 400 inches / 500+ horsepower of pure rump rump. Norm is feverously working on his Model A PU to get it ready for the Portland Roadster Show.
Norm has been putting together neat cars & trucks for decades and now he has built a truly modern hot rod for himself luckily without TPI or other computerized injection stuff, just plain ole big ass carburetor, bump stick and lots of machined, milled shinny aluminum. This all from the likes of the other Good Ole Boys over at Stetsons. He has performed some really neat modifications to this truck, but I will not let that info out. You will need to try to figure it out for yourself.
WAY TO GO NORM!!!!
THE GREAT WHITE NORTH
Spring is almost here in "The Great White North" we are starting to see more sunny days. The bull dog didn't see his shadow so that means there will be 6 more weeks of winter up here in "The Great White North". I'm not sure just how good of a gauge the bulldog is, as if it is cold outside he will not go out side where he could see his shadow.
The car show season will be here fast, and boy will I be ready for it !! I think after all the rain we had this winter most all of us will be ready for some sun and car shows.
This summer will be a different one, for bill and me and the car club members for that matter. This will be the first summer that we will go to the car shows and car club events with our old friend Doug Turner.. Doug has been living in Madras for over 15 years so he has not been involved in car club shows, or activities. After he went to our Mcleay car show he got bit by the car bug again. Now that he will be back in Silverton you should seeing him at all the car club events and at the "unofficial" office having a beer with our Prez. Wes. He said that all the car club members were so friendly and fun to be with and that he was looking forward to getting back in to the car club activity's. Doug loves to liven up things with his off the wall humor, so this will be a fun summer.
Doug is now planing his first hot rod in 30 years, and hopes to have it on the road by the end of this summer, just in time to race Bill's S-10 at Woodburn. I think what happened to Doug just shows us that the car bug in us never dies, that bug may lay dormant in you for years but all it takes is just a little spark and you are wanting that "hot rod".
That is all for March, from. "The Great White North" Edd
No-Nonsense Hero
Before he began his own racing career,
JIM YATES’ quarter-mile hero was Bob Glidden, Said Yates. "The first time I saw him was at Gainesville, probably in 1986. I didn’t have the nerve to ask for his autograph, so I stood outside of his pit area and just stared at him. Finally, [Bob’s wife] Etta came up and asked if there was anything they could do for me, and I just shook my head. Because of Bob, my first Pro Stocker was a Ford, and I entered it at the 1988 Gator Nationals. I went up to Bob, told him that he was my hero, and I was going to try to race a Ford just like [he did]. He told me that I’d be better off racing a GM product because there’s a lot more to it than I ever could imagine. He told me that he could give me his car, the one that he had just won a championship with, and that I probably couldn’t even qualify with it. I was devastated at first because after spending all of the money on the Ford equipment, that wasn’t what I wanted to hear. But he had given me an honest answer, and within two years I began racing GM products. Looking back now, I don’t think we ever could have won our two Pro Stock titles with a Ford." Reprinted Without Permission!!! Sorry WESWes, Bob, AL, Larry, Bill and the rest of the retired members have decided to add another category to Keenans growing list of awards for our shows. (see below)

Remember some of these guys have been putting on car shows at some of the retirement homes or were they really cruising for Chicks? One has to wonder..........
Remember the Kids we sent flags to last year? The Oregon Flags we had flown over the State Capital and then sent them overseas to their home base. Well one of them did us one better. He flew an American Flag over their base, then took it with them on a mission. Then created a nice picture with all the flight crews name and signature and a letter on their stationary to commemorate the event and then sent it to us.
That Is Pretty Damn Neat if you ask me.
Sue placed the flag and accompanying letters into a very nice frame and they had it up at the Portland Roadster show this past week and Bob Noble will have it at the March Meeting for everyone to see and admire. Then it probably well be displayed at several other sites. Ole Noble has a plan already in motion! Like I said earlier, Pretty Damn Neat!!

CLASSIFIEDS or What the rest of the Club does.
Hell, I gave Norm some free advertising, may as well share the spot light with a few other Members of the Club. Jim Woods and the gang down at Silverton Super Service are way cool. They fill your gas tank and your coffee cup, let the Club hang out there and even sometimes work on members cars. I know I have had them perform some maintenance and repairs on my rigs. Our ole buddy Mac works there as one of their mechanics and adds a little flavor to the place.
Now some of the other Club Members that perform services rather than work for a living that might assist you in your home, car, or personal maintenance.
