Silverton Flywheels June 2005

For those of you that have not heard a beloved member passed away this last month. Carl Brown passed away late Monday night, May 23rd. The Flywheels were in attendance at the funeral which was held on May 31st. Please keep Ann in your thoughts and prayers.

Meeting Stuff:

Well, I need to chase down Larry or Brian to find out what went on. I was gone that week at a Airport Fire Fighting School. WAY COOL TOYS!!!! OKAY, here’s Larry.......

Larry Brown, PR Guy/Acting President, called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. at the Countryman. Sgt At Arms Brian Littlefield serving as Acting Vice President assisted him. Pres Oster and V.P. Noble had attended an F-100 truck gathering in Pigeon Forge, VA but were now reported to be in Florida. Apparently, they got lost going home. Secretary/Treasurer Rand Breitbach was reported to be attending a fire department conference in Salt Lake City, UT.

Larry read an Email from Rand claiming to have met a number of famous Bonneville salt flats racers at Bonneville during his stay at Salt Lake this week. As the flats are reported to be under water at this time and one of the heroes he supposedly met is dead, the report was taken with a grain of salt. Rand will explain this at the next meeting.

Brian introduced guests Brenden Ren who has an ’89 Ford Mustang and Jeff Fossholm who is acting Silverton Chief of Police while Chief Rick Lewis, who is a Flywheels member, is working in Iraq. Jeff said that Rick is busy training Iraq police with a new class every two weeks. He expects to return home in early November.

Bob Bullard reported that member Carl Brown is in Mt Angel Towers struggling with cancer. He would welcome visitors in the mid afternoon.

Rod and Patty Wymore brought a box of hot wheels that Flywheels will donate to the Silverton hospital to be given to little guys who are waiting with their family at the hospital. Patty also donated a large basket of small bears to be given to little girls who are waiting too. These were from her personal collection. Much appreciated.

Jerry Thomas brought a sack of cans of food that had been collected at the garage meeting for our contribution to food for the needy. Members added to it at the meeting.

It was reported that the Oregon flags for military members who served in Iraq have all been shipped to them.

Bob McGowan reported that there was a good attendance at the gas station get-together on May 14. About 100 motorcyclists who got lost also attended the event.

Bob McGowan also said that using our Email addresses through the club web site has brought some spam mail. He will ask for more reports of this happening at the next meeting and see if this service is worth continuing.

The Homer Days davenport race committee has a couch, wheels and suspension parts. They will announce a work day at the next meeting to work on it.

Keenan Foraker reported that two students have been chosen for first and second place for the Jon Dunn scholarships. The presentations will be made on June 2 at the high school awards and scholarships ceremony.

Car events were discussed. Larry listed the ones in this area, which are coming up in the next month or so. The Silverton Hi School car show on May 27 will be the Flywheels monthly club event. About 8 members plan to show their cars. The Bailey Santana Night of Fire benefit cruise will be on June 3 in the Albertson’s/Rite Aid parking lot on S. Commercial St. in Salem. This will be a club outing that night, leaving the Silverton Hi School Pharmacy parking lot at 6:00 p.m. The Blue Moon will start their Saturday night events at Chemeketa College on June 4. Glen Green reviewed the cruise to Joseph on June 9–13. The Greens are hosting a BBQ in Alfalfa on June 9 before leading the pack to Joseph. The Silverton strawberry feed and the Chemeketa swap meet will both be on June 19, Father’s Day. Stroh’s will begin their first and third Wednesday cruises in Stayton on June 1. The very popular Sunshine Cruz will be held in Oregon City on June 17. Announcement of the slant 6 cruise at Brooks on June 5 was ignored.

The 50/50 drawing winner was Arnie Marcoe. He took home $50.

Respectfully Submitted, Larry Brown

Acting President, Acting Secretary and playing PR Guy.

The Boys R Back:

The wayward pair of Officers (Wes & Bob) have returned from the deep South! And I mean deep, all the way down the Keys as far as you can drive, without being hijacked and your truck turned into a boat.

They did have there usual problems.......Wes found someone new to talk too and Bob broke down. Sorry Bob, but at least it was only a fuel pump, a Ford fuel pump and Wes had to do all the parts running. Not a bad plan.

Almost didn’t recognize Bob when I saw him, he was so tanned it looked like he had spent a week on his riding lawn mower, but we all know that couldn’t have happened, we had a slight breeze all month. But that’s what you get for driving 8200 plus miles with the window down, arm hanging out and bugs in your grille. And I do mean BUGS!!! Hopefully the guys took a picture of them! It was lucky that the border patrol was off duty when they cruised back into Oregon, we are sure they have a few endangered species and probably some bugs that are not legal in Oregon.

Membership:

Well, Wes was able to talk someone from New York to join the club, or how Bro Bill put it. Probably thought it was cheaper and easier to pay the dues than to listen to Wes all week end!!

Secondly, I ve been getting weekly updates from Chief Rick Lewis in Iraq. Things are going pretty good and he was able to send some pictures back with the Club Plaque on one of his vehicles they use. Oh yeah, he also had an Oregon plate there too with the Gov’s signature on it.

WANT AD’s:

Need a GM 12 Bolt Corporate with 3:73 gears for a leaf spring car, cheap would be good. Jeremy Benz 503-873-7803

WES’s CORNER!!!!!!!

Well, Bob and I made it home from the F-100 show in TN. Had a great time. Drank a little beer and told a few stories. There was around 1000 trucks and special invites. We meet the tour in Barstow, CA. The tour was way down in trucks this year. Could be because of the high gas prices or everyone is planning on going next year because they are giving away a "56" truck next year. We left the show May 12th and headed for Key West Florida cause we had not been there before.

Three years ago we went to Charleston S.C. to see the Atlantic Ocean and on the way we stayed our last our last night in Lincoln City, OR so we could say we drove those old trucks coast to coast.

This year we drove them old trucks as far south, Key West FL, as you can and still be in the U.S. without getting them wet. Then we headed home by way of AL-MS-LA-TA-OK-NM-AZ-NV-OR.

The milage for the whole trip was over 8200 miles. Very few problems along the way, high priced gas was one, ran out of gas once, hood latch, wipers and a few pump. NOT too bad for a 8200 mile trip.

Making PLANS already for next year. Should be another GREAT trip. Little Brother Edd is planning on going next year. Don’t know what way we will come home next year. Also picked up another member for the "Club" from New York State.

Don’t forget the June meeting is June a6, 2005 and it’s at The Countryman starting around 7:30 PM. Dues are due if you have not paid yet. See-You-All June 16th      Later Wes
