February Flypaper 2005

Monthly review:

Okay, we’re back to the old grind of watching races, bitching about who did and didn’t win and now lets throw in car show season is upon us. Wow, what a start for the year, we cleaned house at the Salem Car Show last month and Ole Noble will give you an update later.

Meeting Stuff:

Well we had a giant meeting in January, Close to 40 members and guest showed up and 3 of the guests even joined!  James Van Damne, Chris Hathaway and his dad Phil Hathaway joined the group.

Some new things going on at meetings, besides bringing Hot Wheel cars to the meetings, now we are going to ask members to bring a can of food or (?) to meetings to help with the local Food Banks.  I think we are going to add that to our flyers for the shows, “Bring a Can of Food”

Club is looking into information about “Buying” Oregon Flags for local service men/woman that are deployed overseas.

Glenn Green is working on a 2-day trip from his B-B-Q to the Joseph Run in June. More info as I get it.

Website has a new Forum addition to it and it is pretty cool.  Check it out.

Upcoming events/ideas?

Need to start planning on a few old and some new ideas for the Club this year.  Hey, if the Club has such a great time at the Homer Show and expect lots of cars, spectators, etc. to show up, how about if the Club does something in return? Besides having a lot of great cars and people parked in the Park?  Lets get off our backsides and find a couch to build for the davenport races on Sunday, Then we could side on our backsides in style and be part of some downtown fun!  Tracy, the chairperson of the Davenport Races approached me last month about putting a team together.  Pretty Cool Idea! Just think, a 3 piece sectional with 12 members sitting on it drinking a cold beverage being pushed down the street by all the Young Bucks of this Club.  Life does not get much better!!

Next is the MHRC has approached us again about assisting with security at the Portland Roadster Show.  Sounds like some of their Members will be down this next Meeting and Chat with us.

Daytona 500 is coming up and the Club is arranging for breakfast and viewing at The Wooden Nickel on February 20th about 9 am on, race starts around 10am.

Wes's Corner!!

First off would like to congratulate all HE WINNERS from the Salem Car show last month.  Club members took four first places, four second places and long distance award.  Also The Club picked up a third place for Club display and first for Club Participation.  Not to bad for only 13 entries.  Will not try and give names cause I'm sure I would get that all screw up.  Again way to go crew.

The Club got an invite from Prez. Jim Watkins of Henry's Half Ton's to come along with them on a couple outing   Feb. 19 05 tour of Mario Treits racing stables in Aurora Or. Mario is a salt flat racer and is building a new car and has old ones to look at also.  Tour from noon to four pm.  And again on March 19 05 going to Tacoma WA. to tour the Harold LeMay car museum.  This will be a one or two day trip.  Museum opens at ten am.  Some of Henry's club are going up on Friday the 18 and will be staying at Howard Johnson.  Something to think about before Feb. meeting.

Anyone that was planning on going to The Ramage F-100 show in Ocean Shores Wash. Co-sponsored By Henry's Half-Tons need to make other plans.  The Aug. show has been canceled maybe forever.   I am sorry to see it go.

Looks like we may be doing security again, for The Portland Roadster Show March 4-6 2005, if we can get a crew together.  More on this at Feb. 17 2005 meeting. SPEAKING of MEETINGS our Feb. meeting is the 17 of Feb. 2005 at The Countryman starting around 7:30 pm.  AND remember DUES-ARE-DUE and still only $12.00 per year.

Sill working on the "56" but it is now home.  Rods-N-Relics of Silverton got the new steering column, wheel and gas pedal installed.   And Rand and I with some help from, Noble and old Bill, got it rewired and back home in my shop.  Still got some fine tuning to go before its on the road.  Well, that about all from here.  Later Wes

SEE-YOU-ALL at the meeting Feb. 17 2005.

CAR SHOW UPDATE:

The Salem Custom Car and Speed Show on January 22nd and 23rd was a grand success for the Flywheels, and I want to send a huge thank you to everyone who participated.  The club entered 13 cars, and we came home with 11 trophies.  It couldn't have been nearly so successful without all the help and support from the club members, from setting up the display on Friday afternoon to clearing the auditorium on Sunday evening.

We came home with 4 first place trophies, 4 second place trophies, longest distance award, first for club participation and third for best club display.  WELL DONE everybody!!  First place trophies went to Tano and Sue Lonzaga for their beautiful 1954 Chev Pickup (and that from a Ford guy), Larry Brown for his 1926 Ford Roadster, Darrel Williams (DW) for his 1923 Ford T-bucket (even though it is Volkswagen?? powered) and Glenn Green for his 1954 Ford Convertible (Glenn also won the longest distance award plus $40.00 travel money - I think he even bought some beer).

Second place trophies went to Rick and Connie O'Malley for their 1969 Plymouth Road Runner, Keenan Foraker for his 1934 Ford Roadster, Arnie Marcoe for his 1948 Ford Coupe and Ken and Carolyn Gallagher for their 1938 Ford Sedan.

Seems like every time I looked up there was a Flywheel going up to collect another trophy.  For those club members that weren't able to make it to the show, you missed a fine show.  For my money, this is a show that the club should think about participating in on a regular basis.  They always have celebrities there, and this year they were Enos and Rosco P. Coltrane from the "Dukes of Hazards" TV show.  I really think they missed the boat.  They should have had Daisy Duke instead.        V.P. Bob Noble

I’m done, see yah at the Meeting. Rand
