The Silverton Flywheels Newsletter

NOVEMBER 2003

Hey there everyone, We’re Back!!! That is the wandering troop of NASCAR diehards and the ever loving car nuts that attended the SEMA Show.

Wes, Glen, Justin & Mark (a buddy of Edd’s from up north) all went down to Phoenix and watched a couple of car races and then meet up with Edd, Bob and myself at Las Vegas for the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show. This show is the worlds biggest High performance parts and equipment show. Let me tell you, I have been to a bunch of these shows, but nothing compared to this one.

But on to Club stuff. We have a X-Mas party coming up, Election of Officers & The New Year, WOW, we are going to be busy!! Oh, Okay back to business, here are the October meeting notes:

Old Business:

Wes recapped the past two runs. Motion made to fix some Neon signs with club money for the auction. PASSED

General discussion about the need to talk to the Salem Car Council about all the conflicts of dates for the shows. We have in the past to no avail.

New Business:

Bob Bullard brought up the Portland Roadster show for 2004. Same type of thing as last year. Anyone wishing to display your vehicle, contact Bob Noble or Bob Bullard. Looks like about 10 cars so far. Need to make up your mind fast and get a form from Bob Noble to make it happen.

Meeting location discussed again. Motion made to stay at Countryman until 2004. Looks like we will have that to talk about at the January meeting.

Rand looking into Club sweatshirts and long sleeve T’s.

Yeah, we know we are low on club plaques and Wes has ordered up a couple of dozen. Should have some at the next meeting.

Discussion about getting a large Club Banner that shows the two car shows with changeable dates, etc. Wes to check into it.

Bob Bullard wants the club to approach Spirit Mountain about the club hosting a June Run there for them. Some discussion, no real plan, but Wes will talk to someone over there to see about the possibilities.

Club window decals are here. Jeff & Kathy Brown worked on getting these and they look pretty cool. Need to come to the next meeting and check them out. They cost $3.00 and I have about 20 or so left (?). But we can get more and in most colors.

Keenan gave a short brief on their 2004 Cruise to California or Nevada (?) Dates are June 25-27, same as the Joseph Run.

Members Goings on:

Mark Hagedorn’s plan and what a plan!!

As I mentioned, my plan for my 66 Dodge is to turn it into a version of what a 1966-67 NASCAR stock car would look like. To accomplish this I have been researching the details for over the past month and still have a lot to learn, however I have made contact and am communicating with some local new friends who actually built and drove stock cars during that time period.
At first I thought this might be less expensive than just the basic restoration however I am finding that a replica stock car needs the following to just get by and will probably cost me more then I expected.

Hood and trunk pins
4-speed transmission on floor with complete new linkage
8-point roll bar with crossover
Windshield and back glass brackets
Goodyear Blue Streaks
Steel wheels with race lugs
Capped head, tail and blinker lights
Gauge panel with period gauges and switch starter
Vintage Sun Tach and 160 MPH speedometer
Body work and basic paint job
Racing numbers, hood H.P./C.I., driver name and sponsorship paintingsAuthentic contingency decals
Sheet metal back seat area
Headers
3-inch side exhaust
POSI
Total rebuilt engine and more............................
The other trick to this will be to also keep it street legal. Believe it or not you would be amazed that during 66-67 they kept all the glass in the vehicle, left the bumpers on, they had no fuel cells or quick fill method, they left most of the interior stock and kept all trim on the exterior of the body to even keeping the hood emblem on.
This is my plan and I'm stick'n to it however I will be doing this in 3 year plan.     Mark

Keenan here:

I have put together a cruise to Carson City Nevada on June 25-27. This is the 20th show and booked as a party. Event sold out the last 11 years. Anyone interested in going contact me for a registration form and more info. 503-873-5777

Wes's Corner!!!

Well another month gone will be the new year before we know it. For me its been a busy month. Still remolding the house next door. Some day it will be done I hope. Then will have nothing to do. SURE! I went to the NASCAR race in Phoenix the first of the month and were joined some Flywheels at Las Vegas for the SEMA Show. Good time was had by all. BOTH outings are way worth the trip.

The Phoenix track is one of my favorites. They did a lot of improving of the track from last year which were all for the better.

The SEMA Show, don't even know how to tell you about it other than, BIG, we spent about six hour a day for three days and maybe seen about half of it. If you could not find what you need for you Car/Truck there you did not need it. Also some of our members joined the 165 MPH club at the Vegas Motor Speedway. Bob Noble, Glen and Justin Green and I did the, ride along, three laps around the track in a Cup car. That a KICK do if you ever get a chance. Next time for me will drive the damn thing. All it takes is money.

Reminder!!!! Need sign up for The Portland Roaster show as soon as possible would like to know how many are planning members are entering the show. Also need to start a helpers work list.

Nov. meeting will be Nov. 20 2003 at The Countryman,, 1405 Mill St. Silverton Oregon. Starting around 7:30 p.m. Hope to see you all Thru. night the 20th. Later Wes (Member of the 165 club.) Yeah Wes, what type of motor did they have? Not a Blue Oval!!!!

Okay, now that Wes brought up the Portland Roadster Show, we’ll chat about it. We need to all jump on the band wagon and help out with this upcoming show. Bob Noble & Bob Bullard are both putting a lot of effort into this, just like last year, to make this a great display and a club function. Any ideas for the display would be great to present at the meeting this coming Thursday. Some of us have already come up with some good ideas!!

CHRISTMAS PARTY 2003!!!! 12/20/03

Now on to other up-coming events! The Christmas Party! This will be held on December 20th at the Countryman Public House in their back dinning room so all members and their family can attend. The times are from 7:00 pm until about 9:00 pm. There will be a dinner special for anyone that would like to eat during the get-to-gather. Hope to have the menu items at the meeting. The club will be covering snacks, etc, at the party.

Now, there will be time afterwards for members to hang out and have some grown up fun. But that is totally up to those who wish to stay later. I know Edd, Bill & Glen are up to some of the same sort of things they anted up last year. Lots of joke gifts, awards, etc. Will be presented or should I say Handed Out during this time!!
